Are you ready to embark on an exciting surfing adventure along the sun-kissed shores of Sri Lanka? The South Coast beckons with its beautiful beaches, warm waters, and perfect waves for all levels of surfers. Let me help you navigate the waters of the South Coast, offering you tips, insights, and everything you need to know for an unforgettable surfing experience.
The Surfing Haven of Sri Lanka
Nestled in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka boasts some really great options of surf spots, from beach breaks and reef breaks. The South Coast, in particular, is a haven for surfers of all levels, thanks to its consistent swells, tropical climate, and laid-back atmosphere. Yes I said consistent swell. it is a hidden misconception that Sri Lanka south coast only works during its high season... this is not the case. During its Green season (July to October) there are still a few surf spots that are still working and new ones that only work during the green season, this period generally have bigger storm swells around and variable winds, but you will be very surprised to find some really fun waves during this period. Whether you're a novice looking to catch your first wave or a pro seeking epic barrels, the South Coast has something for everyone.
Most Well known spots
1. Weligama (Beginner to Advance)
Weligama is renowned for its long sandy beach and consistent waves, making it a popular spot for surf schools and learners. The gentle rollers at Weligama Bay are perfect for those new to surfing or looking to improve their technique. If the beach break is not your thing, then you will find a few reef breaks just outside of the bay that pack a little more punch.
2. Ahangama
Ahangama is a well-known surfing destination on the South Coast of Sri Lanka. The surf breaks in Ahangama and surrounding areas are all reef breaks. This is not to say that beginners will not be able to surf here, but more caution should be considered when surfing some of these spots. In general, the reef spots are very soft and user-friendly but it is advised for the unexperienced to have a Surf Guide or Surf coach to assist you.
3. Hiriketiya
Hiriketiya is a beautiful little bay on the South Coast of Sri Lanka. It boasts a picture-perfect tropical image with palm trees and a white sandy beach. It has a fun left-hander reef break for intermediate surfers then the perfect soft beach break on the inside with a few surf schools use.
Tips for Beginners and Intermediates
Choose the Right Surf School or Surf Coach: Enquire about a reputable surf school or choose from a big selection of Surf Camps with experienced instructors who can guide you through the basics and help you progress. Or like I say help you feel more comfortable in the ocean and the waves.
Start Small: I have always recommended starting at a soft beach break like Weligama, where you are able to stand and grow your confidence first with smaller waves and in the ocean with a surfboard for the first time. This is where the right Surf Coach or Guide is invaluable.
Practice Makes Perfect: Consistency is key. Spend time in the water, practice your pop-ups, and learn to read the waves to enhance your surfing skills. This will take time so don't be discouraged if you fail more than you succeed at the beginning. Surf is a long game.
Safety First: Always respect the ocean, follow local surf etiquette, and pay attention to any warnings or guidance from others around you.

Immerse yourself in the vibrant surf community, savour local delicacies, and unwind at beachfront cafes as you soak up the stunning sunsets.
